GLMO’s Open Forum

GLMO had our Open Forum and invited all Gitxsan members to attend. The focus was on learning about what GLMO actually does and does not do. A PowerPoint presentation was created to show what our mandate is, our mission and vision statements and about the technical services we provide. A video by Dan Mesec was also created and shown at the Open Forum.

Upper Nass Land Use Plan (LUP)

The Upper Nass Land Use Plan (LUP) is presented by the Gitxsan Simgigyet of the Upper Nass Watershed who have chosen to participate in the development of the plan. All Gitxsan Upper Nass Simgigyet were invited to participate in the development of the Upper Nass LUP,
however, the Upper Nass LUP applies only to the Huwilp and associated LaxYip that are identified as participating members of the Upper Nass LUP.

Mining 101

A two day “Mining 101” mining education workshop was held for Gitxsan Hereditary leadership on October 11 and 12, 2023 in Hazelton BC. The event was co-organized by the Gitxsan Lax Yip Management Office (GLMO) and SkeenaWild Conservation Trust, and was attended by Simgigyet (Gitxsan Hereditary leaders), Wilp representatives, and GLMO staff.

There is some current coal and mineral exploration interest on the Gitxsan Lax Yip (territory), and there may be more in the future as industry, BC, and Canada continue to pursue expanded mining. This Mining 101 workshop evolved from a suggestion by some Gitxsan Simgigyet that more information about exploration and mining is needed to assist land management decision-making.
